Navigating the HR Jungle: Why Building Your Tribe Matters More Than Ever
If you’re reading this, you probably understand the immense pressure and overwhelm that comes with being in the world of HR right now. It’s like trying to tame a wild tiger while juggling flaming swords. We get it. Having each partnered with HR leaders for over 20 years we see the challenges escalating and the overwhelming need to have a supportive community who gets it being at the heart of what helps people cope.
In our own way we’ve both tried to support an facilities this the Sullivan Brown Team have been hosting online and IRL events for many years, and why Paula founded the SPARK community to create a place where you can take the isolation, frustration and overwhelm out of culture cultivation and change through a supportive and collaborative community.
So why is being part of community something you need to force to the top of your to do list?
1. The Oxygen Mask: You know that safety announcement on flights about putting on your own oxygen mask before helping others? It applies here too. You can’t be all you need for your team and colleagues if you’re running on empty.
2. The “Pause” Button: so often we just push through meeting after meeting and task after task. Short pauses during the day, even just a few deep breaths or a stroll around the block, can recharge your mental batteries and boost your productivity. Social connection is a great way to change gears and reenergise.
3. The Positive Energy Cycle: Ever noticed how positivity breeds positivity? Surrounding yourself with people that make you smile and look at the positive is a great tool for looking after yourself. A positive mindset can buffer you against stress and improve your overall wellbeing.
4. The Art of Self-Compassion: We’re human, and we all make mistakes and a lot of us find it hard to no when we should. Sometimes we need to see those things through others’ eyes and interpretation to keep them in context and stop ourselves feeling overwhelmed with negative self-talk. A great tribe can help you keep things in context and push through guilt.
Now, we know what you might be thinking. “I barely have time to breathe, let alone be part of a community!” And I get it; the workload can be crushing. But remember, a community doesn’t have to be a massive time-drain. It’s about quality, not quantity.
Preserving your energy and wellbeing in the high-stakes world of HR is a journey is critical to your success and let’s face it, your health.
Join online HR groups, attend webinars, WhatsApp’s groups, or a monthly virtual coffee chat with people you respect and enjoy can all help. Even just a few minutes of connection can work wonders for your sanity.
